Quick Guided Tour: What is it like to use?
We have read all of the newspaper items for you and created a record of each one. Each record contains words that describe the item, as well as headline, page, date, etc. We always use the same word for a topic. To look up the index, choose the Search/Find option and type in the word for the topic (or use the Search Wizard in the Windows or DOS versions). Idealist or FileMaker will immediately find all of the records that have that word. You can refine the list by searching for another word in it, or start again with another search. Display the newspaper page on the screen. You can pan, zoom and print the image or save it to a disc.

All versions were available on the same CD-ROM.
The Windows version includes Idealist for Windows search software and ViewPic image viewer. Requires a microcomputer with CD-ROM drive, 386SX or higher microprocessor, 4MB of RAM (8Mb recommended), VGA display, mouse, 1.5Mb hard disc space, DOS 3.1 or later, Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later.
The DOS version includes Idealist search software and ViewPic image viewer. Requires a microcomputer with CD-ROM drive, 512Kb of RAM (2Mb recommended), VGA display, mouse recommended, 500Kb hard disc space, DOS 3.0 or later.
The Macintosh version includes FileMaker Pro 2.1 User search software and TIFFWindows image viewer. Requires an Apple Macintosh microcomputer with CD-ROM drive, 5Mb of RAM (8Mb recommended), System 7 or later, Hypercard.
The text of THE AUSTRALIAN existed in free text form on THE AUSTRALIAN's computers from October 1994. The 1994 CD-ROM was the last to be produced in the index + page image format and the last to be produced by Quarrion Documentation and Training. Any access to the text of THE AUSTRALIAN from 1995 and following years would most likely use free text. Please direct your enquiries about 1995 or 1996 CD-ROM editions or other computerised access to THE AUSTRALIAN newspaper itself. Meanwhile, remember that the 1992-1994 CD-ROMs contain a rich resource of thousands of items that are not out of date for the purposes of research into issues and applications.

Student home use edition orders: Send us a cheque for the required amount (see price list). We will dispatch the CD-ROM by express post or air mail. If not satisfied return the package in resealeable condition within 14 days for a refund. If you wish to use a credit card, order through your software supplier. Give them our address if they haven't heard of us.
School/TAFE/Uni/Library orders: Post or fax us an official order. We will dispatch the CD-ROM by express post or air mail.

You may use the Windows, DOS and Macintosh versions interchangeably. The three versions have different installations and all may be installed on your hard disc or server if required.
Student copies are for home use only.
School/TAFE/Public Library/University/Corporate licences are for use on one campus of the purchasing institution.
Unless you extend the single copy licence that comes with the CD-ROM you may only run the package on one computer at a time. You may extend the single licence to cover simultaneous use across a network on one campus of your organisation. To do this, purchase additional network licences to cover your maximum possible number of simultaneous users. The network licences cover the total number of simultaneous users of all versions at any one time. The licences are a once-only purchase, and may be used with all present and future Idealist databases.
Licensing applies only to the software, databases and documentation. The newspaper page images on the CD-ROM are a single authorised reprint. Making printed copies of them should be done according to your normal arrangements for print media.
